Volodya is unable to talk about his life, he’s had no chance yet, he is not willing to show off himself as a poor guy, he isn’t looking for sympathy and he understands well that he has fallen out of the common stream of living. The artist uses only one explanation: “I love all living creatures, but I love human beings less than else”. During his 60 year life span he has never managed to use a single chance, to make a single step to make his life better. He received invitations from many galleries of various countries: America, Spain, Sweden, Germany, France, Italy, but he’d never accepted. Before the Perestroika, when he could afford to go abroad, the authorities never let him go and he was blacklisted as “Cultural Heritage of Republic”. He was not aware of this fact, but for the Ambassador of Luxemburg (Volodya has forgotten all the names and does not even try to remember them, he is not interested in anything worldly), who in 1980 acquired one of his paintings. The Ambassador naturally did not manage to get the painting abroad. So the black list was uncovered.

And nevertheless Afonin’s paintings were taken abroad. In various ways. More than 2000 canvases have been bought by banks, various companies, galleries and private persons. IBM company, Bank of America, Italian, Swedish, Japanese companies, diplomats, generals are proud to possess Afonin’s landscapes. One of his paintings “Kiji in Winter” hung at Yuri Andropov’s when he was the head of KGB. Andropov was given the painting as a gift by one Igor Sinitsyn, Afonin’s friend. Andropov had never accepted gifts on principle, but he was charmed by the “Kiji in Winter” canvas and accepted the painting as it “emitted light and warmth” as he used to say later. The canvas had been hanging in Andropov’s restroom for years. It was in the best place with a special booster light. The KGB head had no idea about the artist being kept from going abroad because of him. Now Volodya has the right to go abroad, but he cannot do that even if he should want. His family keeps him from going. A couple of years ago Taiwan president’s son, Head of Russian Art Promotion Foundation, invited Vladimir Afonin and Valery Stoilov, his associate, to Taiwan to work with full board and lodging.
